Tidal dissipation at arbitrary eccentricity and obliquity
Expressions for tidal dissipation in a body in synchronous rotation at arbitrary orbital eccentricity and obliquity are derived. The rate of tidal dissipation for a synchronously rotating body is compared to that in a body in asymptotic nonsynchronous rotation. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
متن کاملIn Situ Formation and Dynamical Evolution of Hot Jupiter Systems
Hot Jupiters, giant extrasolar planets with orbital periods shorter than ∼10 days, have long been thought to form at large radial distances, only to subsequently experience long-range inward migration. Here, we offer the contrasting view that a substantial fraction of the hot Jupiter population formed in situ via the core-accretion process. We show that under conditions appropriate to the inner...
متن کاملElliptical instability in hot Jupiter systems
Several studies have already considered the influence of tides on the evolution of systems composed of a star and a close-in companion to tentatively explain different observations such as the spin-up of some stars with hot Jupiters, the radius anomaly of short orbital period planets and the synchronization or quasi-synchronization of the stellar spin in some extreme cases. However, the nature ...
متن کاملMars Thermal Evolution: Aided by Tidal Dissipation?
Introduction: Early models of accretion of Mars [1] suggested long time scales and led to assumed cold post-accretion initial temperatures [2]. But later accretion models [3] gave much shorter time scales and led to the general acceptance of a hot Mars heated by the kinetic energy of impacting planetesimals. Evidence from isotopic studies also seems to require early melting; in particular, Hf-W...
متن کاملThe Hot-jupiter Kepler-17b: Discovery, Obliquity from Stroboscopic Starspots, and Atmospheric Characterization
This paper reports the discovery and characterization of the transiting hot giant exoplanet Kepler17b. The planet has an orbital period of 1.486 days, and radial velocity measurements from the HobbyEberly Telescope show a Doppler signal of 419.5 −15.6 ms . From a transit-based estimate of the host star’s mean density, combined with an estimate of the stellar effective temperature Teff=5630± 100...
